Dave Brubeck: Private Brubeck Remembers          (7 of 7 found this review helpful)
  March 2, 2007

This is a great disc to listen to with a good single malt on a quiet evening. The playing is relaxed and sure. In the multi-channel mix, it is as though Brubeck and his piano are in the room with you, almost as if he were playing to entertain himself as much as you. The selections are a trip down ... more
Schumann: Etudes symphoniques, Fantasie etc. - Mikhail Pletnev        (5 of 7 found this review helpful)

I am not an expert on classical music, so I can only judge the performance against my personal taste. I quite enjoyed it. Perhaps one day, I'll know enough to make a comparative judgement. However, I do feel confident in saying this disc proves the "SACD sourced from a PCM master should NEVER be ... more
Elton John: Tumbleweed Connection        (11 of 11 found this review helpful)

My favourite of Elton's albums. "Love Song" is transformed in multichannel. The harmonies stand out and the song, simple as it is, envelops you in texture and richness. "Come Down in Time" is a treat as well. "Where to Now, St. Peter", with the effects pedal on the electric guitar shining through as ... more
Miles Davis: Jazz at the Plaza      (4 of 4 found this review helpful)

This is a great snapshot of one of the seminal jazz groups in history (hard to avoid cliche in this particular instance). A must have for Miles fans. A note about the sonics. Carefully prepared recordings from this era, like the RCA Living Stereo series, hold up to modern scrutiny quite well. This ... more
Elton John: Madman across the Water        (3 of 4 found this review helpful)

A long-time favourite of mine has been reinvigorated. Love the jam at the end of Razor Face in m/c. Took a few listens to get used to the m/c mix as this album is so familiar to me, but I'm not going back to two channel anytime soon. A must have for fans of early Elton.

Discussion: Mahler: Symphony No. 4 - Reiner

The Eloquence series has a lot of Ambisonic surround issues and I wonder if converting them to MCH would be a straightforward (and relatively inexpensive) way to go. Naxos certainly deserves their success and you are right to credit them. I have a number of their hi-res recordings (in DVD-A) and they do a fantastic (and reasonably priced) job with ... more
Discussion: Mahler: Symphony No. 4 - Reiner

Last night I attended an MSO performance of Glazunov's Violin Concerto with Hilary Hahn as the soloist, as well as Mahler's Fourth with Isabel Bayrakdarian as the soprano. I mention this because each of these works is available in the Living Stereo SACD series (I have both of them). I should point out that I'm a newish classical listener (I've been ... more
