Schubert: Complete overtures - Benda      (7 of 7 found this review helpful)
  April 28, 2014

For a mere £10 (or your local equivalent) you get two hours of Schubert in hi-res stereo and surround. At that price it was worth a gamble, and for me, it's mostly paid off. The overtures are in chronological order, starting with some early theatrical and concert overtures written during the ... more
Mahler: Symphony No. 2 - Zander        (9 of 10 found this review helpful)
  April 20, 2014

We are exposed to many recordings of Mahler 2 with diverse approaches to telling the story, and it is difficult to find one which satisfies in all respects. Furthermore, it is a piece in which live performance can be spectacular and moving - difficult to achieve in a recording, even with the highest ... more
Elgar: The Dream of Gerontius, Symphony No. 1 - de Waart        (5 of 5 found this review helpful)

A shame to lose this retailer, I have bought many discs there over the years and the staff were always very helpful and knowledgeable. Talking to them before Christmas, it seems that there was simply not enough footfall to keep the business viable. They said at the time that they intended to keep the mail order business going, but according to ... more
Discussion: Aho: Theremin Concerto, Horn Concerto - Storgårds
July 27, 2014
I was too impatient to wait for the UK release of this SACD in September, so I purchased the download from eclassical. Particularly keen to hear the horn concerto, but the theremin piece was a pleasant surprise - I was impressed at how well the instrument integrated with the sound of the orchestra in such a natural way. Incidentally, I wonder ... more

If you have purchased the box set package the download is not via iTunes. There is a URL provided on the coupon in the package to a page on the Berliner Philharmoniker website, from which one uses the discount code on the coupon to "purchase" the downloads at zero price. More details are provided at the service page on the BPO recordings website. ... more
Discussion: Schumann: Symphonies 1-4 - Rattle
May 29, 2014
My copy arrived in the post today, and I am delighted with the detail and transparency of the sound and the very natural multichannel mix. I have also downloaded the 192/24 5.0 version (more for the novelty than anything else) but I have to admit that I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the FLAC download and the DTS version on the ... more

April 25, 2014
I notice that the Berlin Phil are starting their own label. First release of Schumann symphonies bundles a hi-res blu-ray (including multichannel) and an even higher-res download. ... more
