Ray Charles: Genius+Soul=Jazz        (4 of 4 found this review helpful)

One of the strangest and most fascinating recordings I've heard. For one thing, the title really doesn't prepare listeners for what they're about to hear. I was completely unfamiliar with this album before acquiring this SACD. So yes, it's a jazz album, and yes, Ray Charles performs on every track, ... more
Dexter Gordon: Go        (8 of 8 found this review helpful)

This excellent reissue from Analogue Productions gives us everything good (and not-so-good) about the 'Blue Note Sound.' The SACD is very convincing, in that it's recreating the original master tape. Gordon's sax is hard-panned left, so while his tone is recreated beautifully it doesn't quite come ... more

One word review: Brilliant. Detailed review: Brilliant! Tarik O'Regan was comletely unknown to me before I purchased this disc, but with this one recording has quickly become my second-favorite living composer. He composed the titular composition in 2006 (at age 28!) so I'm sure his name is still ... more

The main attraction here is the Adams, but the other works certainly warrant a few words. Barber's Adagio is easily his best-known work, and receives a very good performance here. I would have preferred that the violins in the climax actually play with less energy - it comes across as forceful ... more

Has anyone actually gotten their hands on this disc yet? I pre-ordered at Amazon and was supposed to receive it on the day of release (June 10) but now I'm being told that I'll get it sometime between now and July 10. I get the feeling that this has been a victim yet again of the confusion caused by releasing this reissue of the original studio ... more

I was very upset when I popped this disc into my player only to discover that there was no surround track. But then I realized that I'd made a mistake: I thought I was ordering a BD-A of the Striggio Mass in 40 parts, which of course included a bonus DVD which included some material in surround (although it always bugged me that it only included a ... more

Yes, I'm perfectly aware that digital discs do not wear out. I was simply making fun of you for being the latest person to claim that a disc "sounds better after the first several listens." The disc doesn't change at all, it's you the listener who changes, especially when it involves a recording you already know well. You're used to it sounding a ... more

So if something about these discs change every time you play them, aren't you worried about wearing them out, just like with vinyl? What if the next time you play one turns out to be the time you ruined it from excessive wear? ... more
