I thought I'd review this since no one else has. In short, this is the best sounding transfer of this classic recording I've heard (I have not heard the Esoteric release). Lots of air and a full dynamic range. Note the 5 star rating for the sound is for the transfer quality and not the actual ... more |

This disc is a sure winner. The musical selections are are all very good and the performances excellent from all involved, especially the sax playing of McQueen. The sound is really natural without any artificiality, spot miking or level manipulation. Just a great disc overall. Highly recommended. |

I guess I just can't agree with the above review by 'Castor'. Yes, this is very good performance and the sound is also very good. However, I don't like the use of natural horns and narrow bore trombones - they're too weak and don't project enough sound. Overall, the brass is too suppressed, ... more |

I agree with the previous reviewer - this is an amazingly good transfer of this classic album. The sound is tight and clear with lots of 'air'. It is significantly better than the Analog Productions release, which is softer and does not quite have the same life-like timbre and transparency.

Not really. Only when the ADC is introducing noticeable distortion, which is quite common with DSD conversion (much less so with PCM). But even PCM with high sampling rates (over 100khz), often introduces some similar noticeable distortion, in my experience. The beauty of the Grimm AD1 is its hi-rez/hi-sampling and yet still super low distortion. ... more |

Yes it does, but the A/D conversion process can be a significant influence, especially for DSD A/D. The bottom line is what I'm describing via anything other than the Grimm is a type of distortion of the sound source plain and simple. The Grimm is not doing anything special or magical -- it's just gotten any induced distortion below audible ... more |
