Sonically this recording is great...but that's also the problem. A good recording is ultimately only as good as the performance it captures. Hewitt's performance is disturbingly bland. Polite, but no soul and nothing profound. "Politically correct" and "canadian" would be a good way to describe it ... more |

This SACD was good, but does not do enough to displace my favorite version by Gould. I purchased this with the oversight that it is recorded only in stereo sound (no multi-channel sound)...which for me is a key selling point of SACD. To my ears it sounds flat and unengaging. This was the third SACD I added to my system. I'm not really impressed in direct comparison to Podger's Vivaldi: "La Stravaganza" and Fischer's Dvorak New World Symphony. Good, but not so beautiful, unlike the pretty face that adorns the cover. ;) |

Awesome! This SACD was the first I ever listened to. I had just received my order from Amazon.com and popped in Podger's Vivaldi "La Stravaganza" into my new (cheap) SACD player not really expecting much. After the first few notes I was amazed.
