The second volume “Orient – Occident” is naturally directed towards Syria in these trouble times. And Jordi Savall explains the genisis: “Finally, after months of preparation and collaboration on the occasion of different concerts, with musicians from Syria, Greece, Israel, Marocco, Turkey, and those from Hespèrion XXI, we decided to record and issue this stimulating new dialogue between oriental and occidental musicians with the instruments and musics of the ancient Christian and Jewish Hespèria, with the istampitte of medieval Italy, as well as the songs, improvisations, and dances of Syria. This Orient – Occident II strives to be a fervent homage to the Syrian people and to once again be a sensitive antidote to the amnesia that dehumanizes us so much.” Once again, Jordi Savall finds just the right tone to define “musical humanism,” and it is with deep respect that we salute such an enterprise.
