Here in two SACDs in stereo only is one of the most beautiful tributes paid to the pianist Alicia de Larocha (1923-2009) via Iberia by Isaac Albéniz who “reveals the wealth of a writing style that is anything but pure virtuosity: on the one hand, the innovations in the pianistic technique are notable (striking the keys, position of the hands, fingering), and would influence countless contemporary composers; on the other hand, the attention paid to individualized sonorities, colors, complex and refined harmony, including the rhapsodic spirit of his works. All place Albéniz in the lineage of Liszt while preserving the originality of an inspiration that is deeply Spanish, and which seems inexhaustible.” (François-René Tranchefort). Thus, on the program of this double album are “Iberia” twelve impressions for piano, “Iberia” suite for orchestra signed E. F. Arbos, “Cantos de Espania” Op.332 for piano, with Jean-Joël Barbier, who also offers us “Spain, remembrances” for piano, dating from 1897, “Mallorca” Op.202, and “Recuerdos de Viaje” Op.71 (VI. Rumores de la Caleta). In an audio restoration that is most accomplished, these recordings dating from 1958-1959 will thrill music lovers and audiophiles.
