Performance:   Sonics:
This SACD is an unparalleled document devoted to the pianist Sviatoslav Richter. On the program are the well-known Concerto for Piano N°2 Op.18 dating from 1901, the Concerto for Piano N°1 Op.1, and the Preludes Op.23 N°1, Op.32 N°9, N°10, N°12. The Concerto N°2 Op.18 was recorded in 1959 with the Leningrad Symphony Orchestra, whereas the First Concerto was recorded with the USSR Radio-TV Symphony Orchestra in 1955. As for the four Preludes, they were recorded in 1960. The rare pearl of this new release, in a limited edition, is the simply miraculous restoration of the master tape for the Concerto for Piano N°1, which required several hundred hours of work for an exceptional result that restores the original tones. This new mastering does justice to the great Russian pianist with an instrumental presence that is phenomenal. What’s more, hats off – and justifiably so– to the courageous and passionate editorial initiative of Pierre-Emile Barbier from the label Praga Digitals for this true musical and audio resurrection. This is a singular SACD one should run to procure.
