Performance:   Sonics:
This is one of the great classics from the EMI catalogue. It has been issued numerous times before on LP and RBCD. The Cello Concerto, the more famous of the two performances, has appeared on CD coupled either as here, as the original LP release was, or with either the Dvorak or Delius cello concertos played by du Pre. I don't see any point commenting on the performance: either you know it, or you should. It may be matched, but certainly it will never be duplicated. The SACD transfer is certainly superior as to richness and fullness to my two EMI RBCDs of the Concerto--much better in every respect to the coupling with the Delius, and somewhat superior to the Great Recordings of the Century coupling with the Sea Pictures. But there is a caveat--there is a JVC coupling of the concerto with the Dvorak concerto that is marginally cleaner in the low frequencies and may have a slightly wider dynamic range, although, as is common with RBCDs, it cannot match the SACD in roundness and fullness. I had no problem deciding to discard the two EMI CDs, but decided to hold onto the JVC as well. This SACD is definitely the best transfer of the Sea Pictures I have heard. But also, one last word: despite all of this, the magic of this coupling still seems to emerge most clearly on either the original HMV or later audiophile reissue LPs. Somehow, the LPs capture everything, where the digital transfers make you pick and choose. At least, that is what I hear.
