The Italian composer Muzio Clementi (1752-1832) was on of the most brilliant pianists of his time, and his works for keyboard, which make up most of his output, are still today barely ever played despite Vladimir Horowitz’ helping hand several decades ago. The “father of the piano-forte”, as he was called, was also a precursor, one might even say the first to edify by his technique what would be become modern piano playing as we know it today. Clementi composed more than a hundred sonatas in which the piano is ever-present. The program proposed here by the young Italian pianist with a preordained name, Vittorio Forte, consists of the Sonatas Op.34 N°2 and Op.40 N°2, as well as the Cappriccio Op.47 N°1 and the Fantasy and Variations on the Moonlight air Op. 48. Born in 1977, Vittorio Forte has won several prizes, most notably in Italy and in Spain, and in 2003 created the Intermezzo musical center on the banks of Leman Lake. In 2007, he won the Vlado Perlemuter first prize “for the best interpretations of Chopin’s works.” It should be said that the interpretive wealth of this recording will not be discovered on first listening. It is only by further listening that one can discover piano playing that is exceptional for its way of grasping the text, for what Vittorio Forte offers in these pages is nothing less than a deep artistic reflection devoted to a composer he cares about. Which transports us to the heart of a singular inspiration wherein notes seem to be born here and now, like masterly improvisation. All of which resonates in full, eliminating any coldness in these admirable works. In a fine recording, transfigured by DSD, this Super Audio CD is noteworthy, even if it may take time to fully appreciate.
