Alison Krauss: Live

Let me position myself here, first: decent sound system (Magnepan/Linn/Red Dragon/Oppo); wide ranging tastes centering on rock and pop from the 70s onward. I only own a dozen sacd titles and am slowly accumulating more. I have better ears than many civilians but do not consider myself an audiophile

Confession: I do not yet own the sacd of this disk. I am completely clear that posting, therefore, breaks the rules. However, so do the previous posts, from which we learn only about hair and the posters' dislike of "country" music. My intent here is to add Much needed background about this recording, because no one else has really done so.

First: Do not be shocked -- shocked! -- to discover this a bluegrass album. If you buy an AK album expecting much different then... I don't know what to tell you. "Do more reading," I guess..

If this entire release, in any form, is new to you, I can say the red book version of this recording is Fan-freakin-tactic. I can imagine being it being too trebly on some systems, but over all I find it to be nicely balanced and very well recorded on my system. This album contains some of her best tracks, including the title track, Broadway, and When You Say Nothing at All. The first minute of Broadway give me goose bumps.

The recording style and quality reminds me of what I hear in Diana Krall recordings except I think this album is a bit more cleaned up -- fewer lip smacks and stray mouth sounds. Therefore its a little less intimate than the ultra-close mic-ing and very natural, un-retouched stuff you get from Krall. That said, I can't wait to hear the sacd version of When You Say Nothing, because the red book is pretty darn good -- very present, very intimate.

If, God help you, this artist is new to you, then the resemblance to Dolly Parton is .. True... But Krauss is a bit less warbler ish to me. Personally I find Alison more evocative as well. Her arrangements and style -- and those of the great Union Station -- range from country cross-over to country to bluegrass, But just like certain people have an accent that can't be hidden in anything they say or sing, her music always has one hand or one foot -- some connection -- in bluegrass. Unlike some historic recording, or something "authentic" from yesteryear, though, her recordings are Uniformly well done, immediate and attractive. In a technical sense it's very contemporary in its precision, and cleanness. Anyone who appreciates hearing acoustic musicians and vocalists in full command of their craft ought to appreciate this disk, if not Love it.

Hope someone finds this helpful. If the site allows, I'll edit or repost when I've acquired the sacd.

I adore Alison Krauss. This album is full of early classics that are sure to please.

That said, if you already have this on CD, or if you can find it on CD at a better price, you should stick to that. This is (as is unfortunately often the case) another fleecing of the audio consumer. A repackaged redbook CD recording. SACD offers nothing therefore, over the actual CD, in terms of resolution. Another 'Super' Audio CD where there is nothing 'Super' about it.

Like the other two reviewers, this album is just too much country for my tastes. I made the mistake of listening to this disc as my first expereince with Alison Krauss's work. Made me wonder what all the fuss was about. Then I listened to "Forget About It" and understood.

It is a shame, because this is a very nice recording. But if you have an aversion to country music, stay away from this one.
