Frankly, in this remarkable SACD we have in our hands one of the most germane issues ever. The recordings for flute and guitar of this period and of this quality are not legion, and in reading the program proposed here we are, to say the least, delighted. It opens with the Serenade Op. 71, 3 by Willy Burkhard (1900-1955), followed by the Capriccio by Hans Haug (1900-1967), the Sonatine Op. 205 by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968), Polydiaphonie by Eugene Bozza (1905-1991), Serenade Al Alba del Dia by Joaquin Rodrigo (1901-1999), and Distribution of the Flowers by Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959). The instrumental duo (Andrea Lieberknecht on flute and Frank Bungarten on guitar) is a perfect osmosis that offers a musical discourse of great intensity in which emotion shines through, sometimes by a simple play of tones that leads us to an unsuspected universe. And Frank Bungarten remarks: "In making this recording, I became aware, without realizing it, of what I had missed for so many years, and of the quality of good music, in which a very dynamic interreaction takes place, composed for this musical grouping. There is a time for everything - I am already excited by the prospect of a new recording with music from the 19th century."
