Alison Krauss: Live

I fell in love with Alison Krauss's voice (much more warmer than Diana Krall, if I might say so) from listening to the samples on Amazon; ended up picking up the DVD of AKUS Live which quickly became my favorite DVD to play. Since a large number of the songs on the DVD are the same as on this SACD album, I was initially very hesitant to put down $75 for a second-hand version of this one on Amazon. However, the 5-star ratings given by a large number of reviewers and the multi-channel aspect of it (and knowing the quality of the performers) pushed me over the edge to buy this SACD.

From the first instance of playing this SACD, I have to admit that the quality of the multichannel recording is mind-blowing. It beats the live recording quality fairly easily, and the musical instruments are placed wonderfully, with the dobro coming out on the left channel and the guitar on the right (similar to how the artistes play on the live), and Alison's violin in the center. The vocals dominate in the center as expected. Alison's voice is silken smooth and the "abrasive" background vocals give a nice contrast. All-in-all, a beautiful recording and I am really really happy that I splurged on this one.

I don't give out 5 stars very often, but this one deserves it both for content and sonics. While Krause has that star quality, the men in Union Station more than hold their own and at least equal her contributions.

Some of Krause's songs are suprisingly forthright about sexuality I thought - not in poor taste but certainly not "Orange Blossom Special" material either. Perhaps that makes them more touching.

The sonics are wonderful. Krause's voice comes through so life-like. Too bad Norah Jones can't have this level of recording. The band has that foot-stomping energy that makes one want to cut a jig.

Alison Krauss is a new voice to me. The music is very well performed and sung. Maybe I felt that the tracks with the male vocalist(s) dont blend in as well. I get the feeling of two different albums taking turns betweens tracks.

Audio is superb! Almost too good. Main vocal is mixed in centerchannel and frontchannels. Im not sure I prefer this to just having the vocalist in the centerchannel. Sorrounds are tastefully used with ambience and some pads/lap steel and some backing vocals. It blends in very well. Overall superb!

A nice SACD buy which I feel will be appreciated by many. Recommended!
