Beethoven's Mass in C is a name day present to emperor's wife, and it is maybe composer's the most beautiful Mass before Missa Solemnis - so Mass in C is Missa Solemnis' "little brother". By the way, I heard long time ago John Eliot Gardiner's recording with Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloist (DG Archiv) and I like it. It wasn't SACD, only normal CD.
This is very welcomed recording of young Beethoven's masterwork, and Sir Colin Davis truly understands young composer's religiously feeling: for example, the opening Kyrie is very beautiful, and Gloria movement's begin is stunning. The soloist makes good team, and their sound is pure and warmly. LSO Live label's 5.1 multi-channel recording captured Barbican Hall's dry acoustic, and it sounds very good. Excellent purchase for all Beethoven fans.
