Einojuhani Rautavaara's Eight Symphonies are modern Finnish music's great cycle, maybe the greatest after Sibelius. Rautavaara's Third Symphony is composer's most famous symphony. It is neo-romantic, Brucknerian modern work. The whole symphony is very interesting: second movement's dreamy horn melody, lively scherzo and strongly finale. Symphony ends in silence. Manhattan Trilogy is also interesting work, but it isn't so interesting, than Third Symphony. Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra plays beautifully and strongly, and Leif Segerstam understands this music's mystical and haunting moments. Ondine's recording quality is excellent. Outstanding recording!
