Performance:   Sonics:
This unashamedly romantic interpretation can be recommended to all those who wish to revel in Dvorak's luxuriant orchestration. Vaclav Neumann, who died two years after he made this recording, takes generally much slower tempi than Fischer in the excellent Philips SACD, but there is also brio and panache whenever it is called for. For example, he requires 6:24 for No. 6 compared with Fischer's 4:56. This approach allows him to bring out the distinctive sound of the Czech Philharmonic woodwind and horns, offering playing that can hardly be more idiomatic. The Fischer recording is smoother and more integrated while Neumann emphasizes the contrasts. Just listen to the overwhelming plaintive sound of the horns in No. 12.
The sound is satisfying even though it must be based on a PCM recording. The dynamic range is more limited than in Fischer's recording, but the loud passages are even more telling. While this version will not displace Szell's reading in my affections, it is a heartwarming performance that I will often return to.
