Performance:   Sonics:
This disc is a mixed bag. The performances are quite remarkable, if not outstanding. In sonic terms, however, the symphony is a big disappointment while the two companion pieces - Karelia Suite and Finlandia - come off much better. In the symphony the rather artificial and diffuse soundstage is dominated by an overprominent and dry-sounding bass, which I find very disturbing. The strings are rather thin and occasionally glassy and the woodwind mostly relegated to the background. It is difficult to locate instruments exactly. Oddly enough, the two popular shorter pieces are recorded much more realistically with a richer and more focussed sound. In Finlandia, the composer's excellent brass writing (especially for the tuba) is very much apparent. Given the modest price, one may consider buying this disc for Karelia and Finlandia alone.
