Performance:   Sonics:
This symphony for various reasons is a Love or Hate item. Most people are initially attracted by the famous March theme which can be a spine chilling experience along with several other parts of the work. This version definitly goes for the musicaly smooth approach which in many ways will detract from that appeal. It seems to me nowadays more versions of Shosty symphobnies are being relaxed and sweetened compared to the Soviet originals and I even noticed a few alterations in the brass/trupmet line that reduced the raucousness of the chaos. This DG item also has a smaller orchestra than seems usual for this monumental work and it seems to be a studio type sound. Neither is it too closely recorded which does give the big climaxes a chance to expand.
This performance overall wont be considered as setting New standards but it us better than a few other sacd versions mainly for its musical approach and I will certainly be keeping the disc. Recording quality is very good for a PCM 2+2+2 recording.Good notes including the fact that this is part of a complete series? some having been released on DVDA.
