This proved to be a somewhat frustrating disc to review. After being much impressed by Kempf’s fine 20th and late 19th Century piano recital discs on BIS, I expected more of the same.

What I got was a bit of a conundrum, at least musically. FK adopts a somewhat reverential and micro-managed approach to Ludwig Van’s sonata classics; every bar – and often individual note – is milked or shaped for utmost dramatic impact. But the end-result seems fussy and over-interpreted. Yes, there’s plenty of drama and pathos, but a high price is played in the loss of the music’s natural ebb and flow. Overall long-term structure is also compromised – many times I seemed to lost where exactly in the score I was…

No such doubts, sonically. This is an exceptionally fine piano recording – truthful, natural and with wholly unconstrained dynamics; as a result, climaxes expand without effort to fill the acoustic space.

I just wish I could have been more equivocal about FK’s interpretations. This is a case where less would definitely have been more.
