I'll always remember the fantastic opening scene from this film with an extended close-up of Depardieu as an older Marais with the light slanting in, reminiscing about Sainte-Colombe. The film has been called a "minor art-house sensation"; it depicts the relationship between two 17th. century French composers. Sanite-Colombe was austere whereas Marais was more ebullient.
That is mirrored in the music of each on this disc, mainly for bass viol. The first half of the disc is mainly slow and sombre Sainte-Colombe pieces before finishing off with some "lighter" (if that is the right adjective) Marais.
We have pieces for viol, also Savall is joined with violin and theorbo as well. Savall is recognised as a legend of the viol and his playing could not be bettered. Warning though this is fairly sombre stuff and will not have you tapping your toes and breaking out in smiles.
The sound from a 1991 master is excellent; listen to the pizzicato viol notes in track 6 and the viol could almost be in your room. There is some sniffling though it is not really distracting. I'll take half a mark off for sound because it is a 10 year old master and Savall's "Isabella, Queen of Castille" sounds even better!

My first experience with Savall. Stunning start by Lully, other tracks beautifully set up, Well I love best No. 9. Suggestive instrumental and voice diction. Soundtrack, which will own the film.

THIS SACD IS MAGICAL. "TOUS LE MATINS " IS A MONUMENTAL TO THE MUSIC AND THE MUSICIANS. JORDI SAVALL PLAYED GENIAL AND THE OTHERS PLAYERS TOO. THE REMASTER TO "DSD " IS A MIRACLE !. IN A ONE WORD,... SUBLIME !.
