Of all the releases on SACD I have been waiting for it is a recording of my favorite Tchaikovsky symphony and BIS doesn't disappoint in this release at all. I enjoyed to a certain extent the recording of the 6th symphony by this team, but it was the 1st for which I waited with hope that it would be done right--and in every way it was. The instruments are caught so delicately, especially in the beautiful 2nd movement. Jarvi catches the ballet-like beauty that is in the scherzo. I do hope that the other performances in the coming releases match this recording.

The sound is equally wonderful. This isn't a harsh-sounding recording in any way and the trick to capturing the essence of this recording is found in the 2nd movement and 3rd movements. While some reviewers have had problems with how Jarvi's recordings in general, his recording of the 1st is much better than his 6th. For one thing, it seems Jarvi at least enjoys what he is doing and the orchestra responds in kind.

Recommended!

Maestro Järvi and the GSO give us a wonderfully lively and romantic interpretation of Tchaikovsky's
equally wonderful first symphony
This is a symphony bursting with memorable tunes, and one that more than once reminds you of the ballets.
Next to the fifth and sixth it is my favourite Tchaikovsky symphony. And it is great to have it so well played and recorded on SACD.With two fillers and a playing time of 77 minutes BIS once again give us value for money. The rather lightweight Snow Maiden was new to me.

The other, Romeo and Juliet is a more dramatic work brilliantly played .And it too has been given close to a SOTA recording by engineer Mikael Bergek. My only slight complaint is that compared to the purist Living Stereos ,I can hear that the admittedly impressive sound, is the result of careful work at a mixer desk, and not always what you would hear live. But still very good! And the tympani rolls at the end of Romeo and Juliet will shake your walls if played at realistic levels.
Recommended.

This is an excellent rendition of my favorite Tchaikovsky symphony. For years I have listened to the Mariss Jansons disc with the Oslo Philharmonic. The Jarvi disc compares quite favorably. The overall reading and playing here is much like the earlier Pathetique disc. So, I think much of what applies there applies here as well.
The additions of The Snow Maiden, and Romeo and Juliet are nice and make the disc a very good value.
I look forward to the rest of this cycle in the coming months.
