Performance:   Sonics:
I am not an expert on classical music, so I can only judge the performance against my personal taste. I quite enjoyed it. Perhaps one day, I'll know enough to make a comparative judgement. However, I do feel confident in saying this disc proves the "SACD sourced from a PCM master should NEVER be allowed" sentiment is utterly wrong. The sound quality (taken from a 96/24 PCM master and converted to DSD) is, in a word, superb. I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could. Even if the performance leaves one unsatisfied (not my case, but seems to be the case for at least one person), this album can still serve as a reference disc in sound quality. I recommend this album without reservation.

Performance:   Sonics:
There is precious little Schumann piano music on SACD - but this is disappointing artistically. Pletnev is a master pianist, but this is probably his worst recording, although the sound per se is superb.

The Fantasie in C almost comes to a dead halt more than once and most of the other pieces have similar distortions. The Etudes Symphoniques are OK but Pletnev amends the text slightly which in this age isn't really acceptable.

Performance:   Sonics:
Because this is the only recording with these particular works I cannot do an artistic comparison. The sound quality of this Multichannel SACD is simply stunning, the dynamic range and the tonal colors of the instrument are captured perfectly. The Stereo Mix is transparent, never boomy and provides a good reproduction of depth, the Multichannel Mix simply puts the instrument into the listening room. Amazing what DSD can do for solo instruments. Audited on Arcam/Kef, see my profile.
Highly recommended.
