Performance:   Sonics:
Is this "the Ultimate" audio experience? Well, no. But it's very good. If I were to put together the "ultimate" SACD sampler, it would probably contain only DSD recordings, for one thing. This one does not, but that's where it gets interesting. In the mix of DSD; 24-bit PCM at 44.1, 48 and 96k sampling rates; and even one 16-bit PCM master, there is an opportunity for learning.

It seems to me that some of the 48k cuts outshine those sampled at a higher rate in terms of air, spaciousness, etc. Your mileage may vary, but it's interesting to be able to compare so many of the different formats so conveniently.

Now about the music: bass-baritone Bryn Terfel's performance of the Wagner aria (cut 13) is alone worth the price of admission (a mere $11 in my case). I am not necessarily a big Opera buff, but I know beauty when I hear it. Renee Fleming does not disappoint. Anne-Sophie Mutter's contribution I have commented on in the review of the source disc. Uneven as all "samplers" must be, this one is, overall, a pleasant and educational addition to my collection.
