This is a high quality production, and if you, like me, love the sound of the early British Invasion, this is a must have. Great sound (I've heard much worse engineering much more recently), and a few unforgettable songs. Really good notes.
For those of you who don't remember the Searchers, they were a Mersey sound band (like the early Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas), etc. who also pioneered the use of the 12 string electric-according to the liner notes, they were a major influence on Roger McGuinn and the Byrds. They were supposedly John Lennon's favorite band (although John was rightly quoted as saying that there was no other band in England that could touch the Beatles in rock and roll). They too were on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964-boy, could Ed recognize talent (he introduced Elvis, the Beatles and the Stones to American TV. He also regularly showcased major operatic talent. Then there was Topo Gigio, the Italian mouse. Something for everyone).
The Searchers aren't the Beatles, and I'm not sure they were even Gerry and the Pacemakers. By and large they covered songs by other writers (so did the Beatles-they had huge hits with "Twist and Shout", "Roll Over Beethoven", and the like, but after a short period of time they started writing hits for others as well as themselves.) This works great for a song like "Needles and Pins", where their distinctive sound takes flight, but I have a hard time taking the "Shoop Shoop" song as recorded by the Searchers seriously (AKA "It's in Her (His) Kiss"). There are times that they do sound like the Beatles in 63 and 64.
Recommended for fans of the genre (like me!).
