As Yes has their classic lineup so does Deep Purple, and this configuration of Blackmore, Gillan, Paice, Glover and Lord is undoubtebly the overwhelming fan favorite.

Live on the BBC is another one of those superb BBC recordings that got lost in the shuffle over the years. God knows why this material did not surface sooner in the SACD format. Originally recorded in 1972, the album was not released until 1980, yet another tragedy for the band and music as a whole. Well, let bygones be bygones and move on. Now we can enjoy it in all its blazing glory, and with two bonus tracks to sweeten the pie. Was it worth the wait? I think so.

What more can be said about the importance of Deep Purple and their fine contributions to heavy metal and blues-rock based music? Okay then, enough said. Per usual the sound is outstanding, as are all BBC recordings usually are, only this time out the sound is exceptionally enhanced. A relative newcomer, the Audio Fidelity label, is making their mark in the burgeoning SACD market. With powerful releases such as this, they will surely move up a few more notches to compete with everyone else doing the same thing. With the exception of not bringing out the guitar to the fullest in some instances, this is near perfect for an archived live recording.

Wait unitl you hear "Space Truckin’," it runs over 20 minutes and there are parts that hardly sound like the original track because of all the improvisation live, its absolutely wonderful actually, and it sounds like more of a progressive rock number than the original metal-rock song that you heard on AOR stations back in the ‘70s. It is all refreshing and innovative as hell to be honest and I think longtime fans will gobble this one up while new fans will certainly be garnered along the way. This one is a no brainer and a can’t miss pick up for any rock fan worth his or her salt.

A live recording of Deep Purple from the early 70's and what is essentially but not only machine Head live. There are also 2 studio tracks as a bonus.

Good things about this sacd: 1) it was mastered from thr original master tapes so it sounds very good. The sound is full, rich and dynamic and it sounds live but in a good way. Blackmores guitar solos, paice's drums.Glovers vocals all sound very good.
2) it's a classic Deep purple album and hard to find. Plus its live and they sound very tight and well rehearsed. Deep Purple sound great live on this sacd.
3) Theres a lot of music on this and some of the tracks are very long....one being almost 20 minutes.

Why this doesn't get top scores: Not all live recordings have classic sound. As it's live one shouldn't expect the very best fidelity. There is a rawness to it that some might not like. And the insturmental layering could be better as the soundstage is a little constricted.
Also the tapes are a little worn on the bonus tracks....one of which is the classic Hush.

Even though it has some minor faults I consider this a terrific classic rock album and sacd does it justice. I always enjoy this sacd immensly when I give it a listen.

Highly recommended. It was also MASTERED BY STEVE HOFFMANN.........ONE OF THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS.

I bought this Hybrid SACD a number of years ago and could only play the CD layer....until recently ...

this was the First SACD to grace my sparkling new SACD player and boy-oh-boy what a nice introduction.

Mastered by Steve Hoffman this is raw Deep Purple sounding their best.

Sonically this is a just a nice warm recording offering some low bass grinding organ bits and a nice wide soundscape.

I grew up with DP's classic Made in Japan and in many ways this one plays right beside it IMHO. I think this album offers a more raw sounding...perhaps less produced feel than Made In Japan and really gives you another perspective on this band.
