A blast from the past. Folk guitar instrumentals on drugs. This album is a cult classic. Any student or fan of acoustic guitar music cannot help liking this disc. Leo is and was amazing. Got to see him live once in the late 70's. A freakin' force of nature. If you only can buy one Leo Kottke disc, this is it. SACD does him justice.

Sounds really sweet especially when considering the age of the source. I'd never owned any original Kottke stuff but had heard many covers by Michael Hedges and others. Acoustic guitar in many styles is one of my music mainstays but I find this a little too spastic to sit and listen to this whole disc. He can sure play the hell out of any guitar but almost every song on this disc is extremely fast and complex and you really have to like his use of a bottleneck slide too...I'm not sure I do. In short, the pieces he plays on this are like a race to show off his skills.

A great disc but but be ready to race!

I love guitar music especially if it's acoustic. This album is considered a classic folk guitar album and has a rather large cult following since it's release.

The style is of the fingerpicking variety. It's folky with a touch of county and "mountain music" sound and beautifully played.
The recording is fabulous and this sacd is remarkable. The guitar is rendered extremely well. It';s closely miked so the sound is very thick, rich and immediate. You can hear all of the different tones of the guitar rendered very faithfully. I guess what I am trying to say is that it sounds like a real guitar. He plays both 6 and 12 string guitar.

There is no doubt that Kottke is a great guitar player and that this album makes for a great sacd. The transfer is very fine indeed. Soundwise it's one of my best sounding sacd's in the guitar category.

However..... people who have never purchased this album before or who have never heard it need to know something. While the sound is magnificent and he is gifted not all guitar lovers will enjoy the music. Kottke has a very unique style. Some say he is awfully busy...almost bizarre..on this album. Some people do not consider his style to their liking. Others say he is just trying to show off his skills to much. I can;t say one way or the other. There are times where he really is busy and the particular notes he strikes may not be to everyones liking. Likewise with the style of the playing. Just be forewarned....it's very unique and interesting playing and his sound is out of the ordinary.

If you love the melodic, relaxing and tonal kind of guitar playing then perhaps you might want to look into other guitar sacd's. If you are risky and just love the sound of good guitar playing regardless of style you will not be dissapointed in the least.

I will recommend this sacd to you with a little reservation.
