|Received The English Suites this week from MDT, and was anxious to give the music it's time.
I have heard the English Suites on other recordings, but I cannot say that I really know the music to be very critical of performance. Angela Hewitt has a reputation for playing Bach's music that is really unsurpassed. I do have other Bach recordings of hers, and find that the playing is superb. I find The English Suites to be similar. There is a lot of music here, and I find it best to listen to each suite separately.
One thing I liked about this set is that Angela Hewitt herself writes the music notes and goes into good detail about each single piece in each suite.
The sound of the recording is good, though I found the piano sound of Perahia's Bach recordings to have more air, and a better piano sound. Those are done in sacd stereo. I found the stereo layer on this recording to be the best. I don't have a multi-channel system, so only can listen to 2 channel anyway.
Hyperion did not do much to give out much recording information, as is the custom with them.
There is no text on the recording. And while that doesn't affect the music, this is first SACD disc I've run across without text.
It would be nice if Hyperion would put a little more effort into it if they want to sell SACD's.
If you like Bach, there is much to enjoy here.
