Not correct. The BDP-S790 plays BluRay music discs perfectly through the coax and optical connections in multi-channel format.

Anyhow, it seems you've discovered an undocumented feature, whereby the BDP-790 can resample SACDs to PCM stereo and output them via s/pdif. That's pretty cool.

For multichannel playback, optical/coax digital audio doesn't have the bandwith to play lossless multichannel PCM or pure DSD. Accordingly, when you hear multichannel on a Blu-ray audio disc, you're hearing the lossy "core" of the DTS-HD Master track, or the alternate Dolby Digital track, not the lossless track. Both major audio codecs are backwards compatible with digital audio output, but you don't get the lossless track.

As for SACD multichannel, your options are pretty limited over digital audio cable. I believe there was a very short-lived feature on early PS3s that allowed multichannel SACD output via DTS, but otherwise your only options are analog multichannel and HDMI.

....

That's a possibility, but more likely it's down to system misconfiguration of BDP and/or patch update issue.

Chariot, do you have the latest system patches installed?

Ralph , I used the Norwegian 2L BD audio discs for my comparison, the BDP-S760 was far superior to the Oppo 103 so much so that I could not bear to listen to the Oppo , HF especially and took the 103 back for a refund, not only superior audio but better more natural video with Sony Bit mapping etc.Reality enhancer etc.. Oppo 103 gives a hard too bright picture on my Samsung LED Smart TV. I do not agree the 760 has been handily exceeded, I also have the BDP-S790.

S/PDIF specification says, that it is impossible to carry higher resolution than 48/24 over this output either coaxial or optical. So almost every BDP is capable to downsample Hi-res audio into 48/24 or most probably 48/16 and output this PCM resolution over S/PDIF.

I cannot reasonably repect your findings on the OPPO. The 105 is the best BD~A player I've ever seen, especially on my Meridian DILA Projector.......simply stunning and then some. Last night I was playing the Britten War Requiem BD~A (Stereo 1963) and the sound was breathtaking. Ironically, with the dual HDMI outs, I am also sending the 2nd HDMI signal to my Samsumg 22" 1080p Monitor which I use to monitor the OPPO when I don't wish to turn on the projector....equally stunning picture.

Your returned 103 was probably not properly calibrated (in the set up menu) and it does take some breaking in period to work its wonders.

Is that for multichannel? Stereo goes op to 24/192 (coaxial) or 24/96 (optical).

Ralph you have not enjoyed the Sony experience,(The very low cost is the problem for you) ha. I did waste 150 hours breaking in the Oppo 103 , its BD sound for me just does not compare favourably with the Sony BDP- S1000ES/760 and I found the bright picture of the 103 very tiring to watch. I have no interest in Projectors.
