Looks like another must buy for me. BIS sound from this source seldom disappoint. Sonically, my current two favourites are Decca's LAPO/Mehta and SFO/Blomstedt.

You've not tried the Sony with Dresden/Luisi? To me it's one of the few performance "classics" of the SACD era.

I also like the Blomstdedt/SF.

The Heldenleben/Metamorphosen with the same team is also very good.

+1, +1

Will be too hard to beat - who can match the Dresden?

I too have used the Blomstedt/SFSO for years as my favorite...I still want to give the Sony a listen though...and yes, I suspect the new BIS will sound fantastic as usual, but I wonder if the orchestra is up to par to play this challenging piece??

Cheers,

Does the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra record in a hall with a decent pipe organ?
The downfall of some otherwise fine performances.

SP Respighi did not have a good organ.

Ah yes, now i remember, I have that disc and commented about the weak organ.
So, I will pass on this new disc.

Three problems...

The organ in Sala Sao Paulo is electronic and very poorly voiced for the hall. Most fine digital instruments are balanced by the factory to really fill the air volume of the hall...

The other problem with this orchestra is that the trombone section cannot play in tune, due to embouchure problems and poor slide technique. They sound like Spike Jones trombones, but playing serious music... UGH

The string section in this orchestra has some ensemble/intonation problems and SACD/DSD mercilessly reveals that, while this might be the best orchestra in Brazil, it is NOT a world-class orchestra, but only one accessible by cheap recording rates...
