I just read zeus's Wikipedia citation.... Dear me, did I TROLL the above discussion? Nonetheless, thanks for noting the Kinder; it looks as if I can break my vow sooner.

Please pardon the 'stuck record' repeat of what I've threaded elsewhere [Temirkanov, 5th), but "--All these Symphonies, and only one Das Lied?"

And that one unanimously condemned. And no Kindertotenlieder, Rückertlieder, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen.... How can the SACD-producing world be so enamoured of Mahler symphonies, yet be so indifferent to his equally-symphonic Lieder cycles? For my part, I am purchasing no more Mahler Symphonies, until Das Lied appears in listenable form.

I was very excited to see that Songs of a Wayfarer is being included with Zander's upcoming recording for Mahler's First Symphony.

I keep hoping to see Das Lied released as part of Audite's live Kubelik series.

That IS exciting - anyone know anything about the baritone?

I have both of Fischer-Dieskau's recordings of these songs - with Furtwangler and Kubelik. I was surprised to find that the latter is much better - first, Furtwangler's conducting is more generalized than Kubelik's-Mahler as Wagner rather than Mahler as Mahler, if that makes sense. Secondly, while FD's voice is somewhat fresher in the first, he is in excellent voice in the Kubelik (if I recall, he had a long layoff due to an accident before recording these songs with Kubelik) and is much more nuanced, but without being mannered. I haven't found anyone to touch him in the songs, perhaps Maltman will.

I don't think Kubelik made a commercial recording of Das Lied, so an Audite of this on SACD would be more than welcome.

DGG Mahler 4 / Berg- Lieder, Abbado/ Fleming /BPO is listed on the mdt website as hybrid SACD, but I saw it last week in the shop as a plain CD, though I didn't note the serial no.

The MDT website must be wrong. The latest Mahler recording by Abbado, the 4th, is CD-only (477 557-4).

It came out after DG stopped releasing SACDs. Their last SACDs were "Carmen Fantasie" and the Sibelius/Järvi box (in August). No other SACD in the pipeline AFAIK.

Yes, definitely not SACD. Pity, that......

Well, here we are again.

How much Mahler do you have? Are you embarrassed about the amount of Mahler in your collection? Do have a compulsion to buy all Mahler recordings as soon as they're issued?

Join "Mahler Anonymous" to get the help and support you need.

My name's Peter and I have:

Chailly complete and 3 on SACD
Kubelik complete
Rattle 10 (both)
Karajan 9
Abbado 6
Mackerras (Happy Birthday, Sir Charles) 6
Barshai 5 and 10
Beinum 3 and 4
Jarvi 3 and 6
Barbirolli 1, 3, 5, 6 and 9
Klemperer 2 (Philh and Concertgebouw)
Bernstein 1 and 4 (Concertgebouw)
MTT 6
Kaplan 2 (twice)
Stokowski 2 (RCA stereo)
Walter 9 VPO and Das Lied
Jochum Das Lied (Concertgebouw)
Solti 5, 6, 7 and 8
Schuricht Das Lied (Concertgebouw)

I'm deeply ashamed.

I am amazed to see that your collection does not include any Tennstedt, Horenstein, Sinopoli or the most famous recording of "Das Lied von der Erde" - Klemperer's with Fritz Wunderlich and Christa Ludwig. Ever since I heard Wunderlich in the tenor part I have found most other singers painful to listen to.
