Discussion: Sibelius: Orchestral Works - Barbirolli

This is an achingly beautiful set of the famous Tone Poems that should be in every Sibelius lover's collection. Sir John Barbirolli's string sound is sumptuous and seductive, indeed a hallmark of his and the results here are impressive bearing in mind that in the 60's The Halle was a middle ranking ensemble of good but not exceptional technical ability.

You wouldn't know it here except maybe in the first piece (Finlandia) where they are slow to settle but they warm up well and Pohjola's Daughter is as yearning and heart-rending as any on disc.

DSD - Teresa you will love it for sure

Thanks -- a useful review. Did you get a chance to compare the EMI Cluytens to the Esoteric?

We are in the midst of testing right now and will report back early next week. I didn't want to do a quick A/B and make extravagant claims on a single session (obviously) but to change order of play and have my wife play one or the other without my knowledge of which etc., also to test on different days, time of day.

After three tests so far I will venture that there are clear sonic differences between the discs and indications are that these differences may be more than just editing preferences.
