Has anyone had problems with this disc? I recently bought it but played it only today to find out that it doesn't play in SACD mode. After a few seconds trying to read the disc in SACD mode, my player automatically reverts into CD mode and says that it is 'not a hybrid disc'. A manufacture fault perhaps? I have never had this with any disc before.

What player do you have?

The Sony XA5400ES. I tried again this morning and now it doesn't play at all, neither as SACD nor as CD. The disc works fine though on my other regular CD player.

Check your other SACDs as well. I'm not sure about the XA54000, but the earlier Sony models are prone to problems with hybrid SACDs which develop over time.

Thanks for your reply, Claude.
With 220+ I can't check all of them, but I sampled a couple but no problems whatsoever. Perhaps it has nothing got to do with it, but my copy of the Young B1, other than the previous instalments in her cycle, has a white lacquer layer. I'm still puzzled as to why it won't play.

I too have a 5400ES and came upon one disc that it wouldn't play if I turned off the HDMI circuit in order to listen with headphones! It wouldn't play the stereo layer, either. I guess 1 out of nearly 400 isn't too bad.

I, too, have a 5400ES as well as a couple of cheaper Sony SACD players. The XB940 had a new laser assembly fitted quite some time ago and has been fine since. The XE-597 started ignoring the SACD layer on some hybrids, reverting to the CD layer, so I decided to have a new assembly fitted to that, too. I probably wouldn't have bothered had it not been for the fact that all three players have been extensively VSE-modified to produce marvellous results, particularly in the case of the 5400 and 597. All three are performing well now

My Marantz SA11S2 is almost 4 years old now and it has never failed to play any SACD (or RBCD). It gets nearly daily use and I leave it on 24/7. I am mightily impressed with the robustness of this unit. The sound is not too shabby either :-)

I think it all depends on the laser pickup. It seems that all the Sony players as well as a few other brands use the same pickup (a part that can be bought for $40 on Ebay), which is prone to that failure.

I replaced mine in a Sony SACD-XA777ES, so far only a few hybrids among my collection of 800 discs still cause problems (I use my Oppo 93 for those).
