Is this a Quad recording or 5.0? Would love to hear Gewandhaus playing Brahms.

The Pentatone RQR's are all 4.0.

All I could find was this 1979 review from Gramophone:
http://www.gramophone.net/Issue/Page/September%201979/57/776436/BRAHMS.+ORCHESTRAL+WORKS.+Leipzig+Gewandhaus+Orchestra+conducted+by+Kurt+Masur.+Philips+6769+009+%28tour+records,+nas,+%C2%A31705%29+0+7699+109+%281295%29.+Notes+included.+Symphonies%3A+No.1+In+C+minor,+Op.+68+No.2+in+D+major,+Op.+73+No.3+In+F+major,+Op.+90+No.+4+in+E+minor,+Op.+98.+Academic+Festival+Overture,+Op.+80.+Tragic+Overture,+Op.+81.+Variations+on+a+theme+by+Haydn,+Op.+58a,+St+Antoni.
According to Australian Eloquence, they have never been released on CD outside of Japan until Australian Eloquence recently did so. Not an encouraging sign.
At least the price is reasonable.

Dull. I can´t find a better word to explain these performances. I had the LP box once.

Apparently, the Grammophone Review was hardly flattering and annointed Solti's Brahms interpretations as the definitive ones to seek out.

I like their Beethoven set very much. Does this sound very different?

Summarizes the reviewer's conclusion: "In fine, sane and civilized as Masur's Brahms is at best, it is as yet no real match for that of his more eminent European rivals."
The Brahms symphonies sacd I love listening to is
Brahms: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3 - Jansons
totally underrated. Slow but luminous readings. Can't get enough of them frankly.

I agree with Polly Nomial for the most part, but the Academic Festival Overture in this set is smashing.

I happen to own some discs conducted by Kurt Masur. I NEVER listen to them. I believe it is because I do not find his performances engaging enough. Am I alone in this feeling?
