This could be a good one, finally. I have Kitajenko's Rachmaninov "The Bells" on a Melodiya from '85 and he finds a wealth of musical poetry others miss completely.

It is nice to see this series continue - I acquired the "Manfred" and while I still retain doubts about the piece itself, found the performance to be extremely effective. Since I have the Gatti performances of 4,5,6 I was hoping he would first continue with the early symphonies, though. The Gatti performances are, in my view, very fine, but fall short of the classic Mravinsky recordings (as do all, in my book), but the fillers are excellent to have.

I agree, it's also my favourite version, despite the dodgy soviet recording technique.

"Manfred" was one of few options on SACD so a compulsory purchase but there are far too many Sixes, even one or two top rated ones as per 'tream' comment above, so this is not for me but I'll be interested in any full reviews that appear.

Well, hiredfox, there is your full review. Sounds like we shouldn't sit this one out. Judging by the fine job Kitajenko did with "Manfred," this No. 6 will almost surely be astounding. (Very good sound on that "Manfred," too.) I can almost say I'm quivering with excitement. PN's description made me think of Celibidache's with Munich Philharmonic: slow, yet with backbone. "Shattering" is the word PN uses.

Then you're missing a great performance and sound release. Your loss really.

Would be interesting to compare to the Philadelphia version. I know many are not Eschenbach fans on this site, but the 6th is one of the finest recordings of all SACDs.
