Since when did Pletnev do a Tchaikovsky for Philips? You're thinking Gergiev.

Ah, yes, I remember it well

That brilliant sky
We had some rain
Those Russian songs
From sunny Spain....

I'll try again with Virgin Classics? Peter is right of course...

Pletnev only did the 6th for Virgin and then the complete cycle was on DG. The Virgin 6th was stupendous, a wonderful recording.

You are right on all counts of course, it was the live 'Pathetique' on Virgin that I was referring to in my original post. Gergiev's were on Philips but for some reason the 5th didn't make it onto SACD.

Maestro Maazel did, in fact, add a bass drum "whack" to the opening bars of the Tchaikovsky 4th on Telarcs VERY fine recording to VERY good effect. I just received Pletnevs fourth on Pentatone and, to my ears, it is lack-luster. The T.4 is one of my favorite symphonic pieces and I own more versions than I care to admit to. My, over-all, favorite performance is by Maurice Abravanal and the Utah Symphony on Vox, although the sound quality is very dated. VERY close seconds are, in my opinion, Maazel on Telarc, Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony on DVD "Keeping Score" series and Marin Alsop with the Colorado Symphony on Naxos. Pletnevs 4th on Pentatone is exceeded, in my opinion, on his earlier reading for D.G.

I find that the tympani lacks definition, and where there is supposed to be a bass drum, it's barely audible! Overall, this is a rather tepid performance. Pleasant enough, but it certainly lacks the fire of the old Mravinsky.

I find that strange. Timpani in my opinion do not lack attack, they are very audible and specially at softer passages they really give a true note (pitch), something not all timpani players and recordings achieve. In the tuttis and the fortes, where the bass drum plays it shakes my room and, at home, I also use B&W 804 (without subwoofer). There is absolutely no dynamic compression in these recordings (5 and 6 to follow, and we are about to start recording 1,2 and 3 (happy easter)), so perhaps you should try to play them at a little higher volume......

I shall look forward to the 5th an old Hi-Fi warhorse !

This brought a big grin to my face. I will own all 6 but the thoughts of 1,2 and 3, well, that is outstanding!

Another technically excellent recording from Pentatone who seem to improve with each new disc. There is never very much to fault with the Russian National Orchestra either, precise and flawless throughout.

One can nit-pick about small aspects of performance but overall it is quite fine although never rising above the pack of good recordings already available and not really as intense and compelling as Pletnev's previous excursion on RBCD.

One can buy with confidence but my SACD preference remains for Gatti.
