Great news. Sony have always said that they've been working towards cheaper SA-CD chipsets and I guess the PS3 is just one place they'll appear.

Here's the official press release:

I notice on PS3's specs list, Sony is also creating a new category called HD SACD as opposed to SACD CD hybrid. Does this means SACD + Video printed on blu ray disc? Hmmmmm I am both intrigued and confused.

As I read it, HD means High Density ... namely the bits that aren't on the CD-compatible layer. I doubt it means a format change.

my sons have a PS2 and I find it a rather noisy machine [reading discs with programs with soft vol like classical and jazz music] ,,, hopefully Sony has addressed that issue the boys will like the improved processor pwr

What do you mean "namely the bits that aren't on the CD-compatible layer"?????

It will be interesting if SACD HD is a higher density optical media format based on blu-ray technology....

I'm sure the Sony officials will be quizzed about SACD HD over the next few months >grin<

At least if the industry pushes Dualdiscs on us [down our throats] they will be playable on a PS3 machine >ha ha

I recall that Highfidelityreview.com reported on SACD ver 2.0 with the inclusion of video content sometime back. But the new spec was never mention again by Sony. Is this coming back in the guise of HD SACD? I also noticed 2 HDMI outputs on PS3 which make it possible to output encrypted hidef video and hidef audio on one cable......hmmmmm very interesting indeed.

"SACD HD" just means the High Density (DSD) layer of existing SA-CDs. There are rumours of HDMI support for DSD though.

I'm comfused about how to connect the PS3 for sacd sound, the spec. says "ANALOG AV MULTIOUT x 1", but in the pictures there was nothing analog on the backside of the PS3... Is it possible they choose ilink/firewire instead ?

As the Playstation site seems to be a bit flaky right now I've enlarged the image and put it here:

See what you think...

I gather Sony will be releasing LCD and plasma 1080 screens which have HDMI conectivity and eventually releasing S_MasterPro Receivers which also support this new interface. Although I gather atm there is only support for PCM. AC3 and DTS. I have read that it would be possible to also support SA-CD DSD and with Sony promoting SA-CD compatibility I gahter this must be the path they are heading.
As for analog AV out I gather this would be conventional [non-HD] tv sets. . .no multichannel SACD audio!
I thought it would have had a component outlet as well.
To get full potential you would need to hook up to a true HD display with HDMI

I suppose if anyone does run into a Sony rep, they should ask how do we extract SACD multichannel audio.. Is there going to be a upgrade to HDMI to handle SACD DSD signals... is the unit quieter to run than the PS2...
still alot of questions
