Thanks Jared for this release !

I have the 3 first beautifully done box released in cooperation with the Museum Catharijne Convent (Christmas Oratorio, Mass and St John Passion) and I had always think I'll never get St Matthew Passion in the same package because it was released before in RBCD !

Can you tell us the reasons that you have once again recorded the St Matthew Passion and if it was a request from Van Veldhoven or yours?

At any case, great thanks and I'm waiting for it eagerly !

Let's hope it's jewel case and NOT digipack. Dual disks with the latter is asking for trouble. LOL!!

That said, I'll give this one a go as I'm mightily impressed with their "Magnificat".

Really looking to this! Same as Domimag, I have the three previous beautiful releases, the cover and the liner notes are literally work of art - Jared, can we hope for the same exquisite packaging again?

Yes, we are doing a co production again with the Catherijn Convent Museum here in Holland. So the booklet is 200 pages with beautiful artwork. Full text from Jos van Veldhoven.
I am also very excited about this recording. I recorded 5 concerts last April in Naarden Holland. This is a tradition going back to almost 100 years of having the St. Matthews Passion in this church. It is a very large church but every performance had 1800 people so the acoustics turned out right. I was able to keep page turning and coughing to a minimum. The two orchestra were separated for these performaces around 8 meters apart! Public was able to sit between them.
The main 'Chor 1) had soloists and Chorus while the 'Chor 2' had only 4 soloists who sang all the parts. Jos van Veldhoven explains in full his research and reasoning for having the seating this way.

I have mastered the multichannel with the 'chor 2' coming out of the surround speakers just like you would have heard if you were sitting between the two ensembles during the performances. It is really stunning and fun to listen to. Its amazing how you can hear all the parts shaping the dialog in such a way that you really have a new experience listening. (at least I am)

For the stereo layer I have the 'chor 2 mostly coming out the right speaker. Does not really do justice but at least you get a bit of the question / answer dialog.

I, too, am looking forward to this release. The best comes last, hopefully also performance-wise!

The previous installments have been very beautifully recorded and these are some of the very few HIP-styled performances that I've found to hold interest even after repeated listening. And the whole thing really is a piece of art, for those to whom it matters.

Glad your cooperation has been able to survive the tough times. Maybe only in Holland!

I'm looking forward to this for a number of reasons. The Netherlands Bach Society is amazing on everything I've heard from them. It's a CC relese with Jared's fine sense of what things should sound like. And the use of multichannel to put us "there" as the audience heard it. Normally I'm an ambiance only kind of MC listener, but I enjoyed Rilling's use of MC on the Britten's War Requiem. Castor's fine review of The St. Matthew Passion has really got me interested! I'm hoping to hear what others say about it. It will also be facinating to compare it to the 2 channel mix.

And if the total package comes close to deluxe edition of the Christmas Oratorio, I may grab one or two extras for gift giving.

Just ordered a copy based on this discussion. Hope it lives up to my expectations. One can never have too many Matthew Passions, as long as they're well performed.
