Thanks for the offer but I don't like sopranos or solo oboe for that matter, really it's odd I landed in this thread, love and madness indeed!

I'm guessing it's a digipak case and cannot be replaced? Perhaps someone who enjoys this type of music will take it off your hands, if not I now understand why you would throw it away.

Teresa, my advice.....Take it.....maybe you can trade it up for a SHM~SACD (and there is NO word in the Japanese language for NO!)

And from the looks of the cover art, it seems like the soprano is about to suffer a wardrobe malfunction!

Such, madness!

I am listening to the FLAC download and hear the same thing. I don't know what to make of this. Vernier on ClassicsToday and Castor here on SA-CD.net both rave about the sound. I'm using a Meier Audio amp and AKG K701 headphones. Many of the tracks have a teeth-grating distortion/crackle whenever Zomer sings forte. I don't think my gear is busted. I just listened to Zomer's Love & Lament recording on Channel and it's fine. Unfortunately Love & Madness is unlistenable for me.

Having read Ernani71's detailed description of where he encountered passages of distortion on this SACD, I immediately played this disc again, but was unable to replicate any of the effects he mentions in his posts.

I fully concur with the possible explanations given by Jonty and rammie.

It might be worth mentioning that this recording is cut at very high level. My average setting for most SACDs is -7 on my AVR. This disc needs to be played at -14, a considerable reduction in volume. I did try playing it at a much higher volume but still could not hear any distortion on Ms. Zomer's voice from the ribbon tweeters in my speakers.

I have not heard this disc on headphones.

Hm. The "it's your hearing" explanation doesn't really explain why it's specifically this recording. The "it's your headphone amp" might explain the difference between this and a couple other recordings, but it's hard to see how it would explain the difference between this and many hundreds of other recordings. In any case, it's a $1000 headphone amp. It damn well better not be the amp!

Anyway, I believe you that you don't get the same thing. It is difficult to imagine that Channel would have released something that sounds like this. It is baffling, though.

Thsi is a demo disc for me. Of course I have not encountered the problmes complained of. I can only endorse Castor's response especially about the level. You need to look at your equipment.

I've listened to these FLAC files in the following ways:

1) USB -> high-end amp -> high-end headphones
2) S/PDIF -> TacT Audio power DAC -> Revel loudspeakers

I guess the problem is more noticeable with the headphone rig, but it is definitely there with the main system.

Since we all legally own the recording, and I already conveniently have it in FLAC format, and since I would be curious to know if I am going crazy, would either of you be able and willing to listen to a file if I send you a Dropbox link to download it?

The conversion of DSD to PCM if not done carefully can introduce clipping/distortion. That sounds the most likely cause. The SACD is immaculate here. The PCM waveform either clips or nears clipping around 3:45, 4:00, 4:45 on track 1, That may be in your downloaded FLAC files.
