Hi Z
Thanks for keeping the site going.
This year has been a bad year for me.
Those pesky Universal people have brought me to near bankrupcy.
If that wasn't enough MoFi go and release the stevie Ray Vaughan catalogue.
It's just not fair. My expenditure on SACD has gone up by a very large percentage.
Anyway, my hope is that other record companies jump on the band wagon. Maybe the prices might even come down?
Finally I do wish we could have a rebrand and just call the format Super Audio.
Here's to 2011.

Happy new year to all! Thank you for the great site. I'll start going through the reviews in earnest as I will be finally getting a true 5.0 system!

Will be interested to learn of your choice especially as you do not appear to be getting a sub ! Happy New Year to ALL.

Happy new one, everyone, what is left of it!

Why no sub in 5.0 system? There can be any number of subs in 5.0, just that the signal is not pregenerated but each channel takes care of the lowest frequences which ever way they see fit, with or without a sub.

5.1 system has a separate low frequency channel prefiltered at a certain frequency and stored at +10 dB level compared to main channels. This is used in cinema, not hi-fi music. For hi-fi the crossover frequency between mains and subs must be determined by the system, not a cinema industry standards committee, which sets the specifications for movie theaters.

A 5.1 SACD disc has 6 discrete channels of audio. If you intend to play 5.1 SACD discs on a 5.0 system (ie one with no .1 channel), then your system must use processing to re-distribute the discrete .1 channel to other speakers such as the front left and right pair.

Therefore, a system containing 5 speakers running full-range and a sub (for the .1 channel) is the purest, most transparent way to play a 5.1 encoded disc.

People who argue that they don't need a sub because they never used one in their 2 channel system miss the point that CD and vinyl contains information for 2 speakers only. A 5.1 SACD requires a sub to be used, else otherwise you are manipulating the signal after the engineer has finished their careful work.
