Sometime last winter, I was informed that Blomstedt's Bruckner would constitute a complete series on Querstand. I confirmed that by writing to Querstand and I suggested to them that they make a small write up and submit it to sa-cd.net as a news item.

For whatever reason this never happened. I deem it newsworthy. These are excellent interpretations and very fine recordings. These are probably the recordings you will want to get if you are only to have one of each Bruckner symphony. If like me, you see the value in duplicating certain works in your library these are first line recommendations.

These are great news. I have already the SACDs already released (Bruckner 6-8) and waiting eagerly for this one!

This one is now available from the abruckner website, and I now have it.
Like the other 3 Blomstedt discs, if you like those. Nice addition to the collection. Hope they continue to come once a year.

I only have one, the 7th, but want to get this one and the 6th. Blomstedt and Bruckner are perhaps the best combination out there today for this repertoire.

First listening tonight! Movements 1 to 3 had me thinking I was hearing the definitive 5th. The finale is a little more problematic. Blomstedt takes a measured speed, but I'm not sure this works best. I'll have to do some more listening first. I have the Haitink on order and haven't quite gotten to the Janowski yet, so I've got a journey ahead of me! But with music like this, that's great news!

I've tried and I've tried, but as much as I try, I just don't get Bruckner. I do enjoy much of what Blomstedt has done in the past, so maybe I'll give this a shot. Bret--I'll look forward to reading how they all compare.

Probably easier to start with either 4 or 7. I did and now enjoy them greatly but I'm still stuck getting thru 5.

Thanks John, I've had multiple renditions of these, but while I hear good pieces, I still don't hear any Bruckner as a whole.... Trying, though.

No question, this is one of, if not the, best Bruckner 5 on recording. Blomstedt in some repertoire, such as Sibelius, has tended to be somewhat tepid, but his fires are burning strongly and astutely here. His long associations over the years with the Leipzig Gewandhaus, no doubt, play a part. Pure pleasure for this listener.

I attended a performance of Blomstedt conducting the SF Symphony in this work (sans score.....impressive for a man of his years) earlier this year...he knows Bruckner backwards and forwards. Of Bruckner's most-often played symphonies (4,5,7,8,9) this is the toughest nut for me to crack - this might be the symphony that caused Bruckner to have the reputation of note-spinning - but Blomstedt led an absolutely committed reading.

I believe that Blomstedt in fact is having a golden age in his 80's. A few years ago he gave an absolutely luminous performance of the Sibelius 2nd. He has never been a conductor to call attention to himself, and I believe he is seriously underrated.
