I was reading in a video mag an article by Robet Harley that Blu Ray will have specifications for high rez music in multichannel, yet the discs will allow for video as well, possibly stereo tracks, basically everything.

It would seem that this would be a great thing since you could get alot of content on the disc, satisfying the average listener (mass public, who must watch something when listening) as well as connesueirs.

I do believe the specificatio was for PCM High rez, like DVD-A.

Does anybody think one of these formats will supercede SACD and DVD-A?

People are adopting HDTV. Sooner or later they will get a BluRay or HD-DVD player, and then they can start buying movies with High rez sound, and music with videos, also with high rez sound. Why not?

I'll be buying one of these players once software becomes available and a high quality unit comes out.

BTW, I love SACD and wish they would use DSD for movie and music too.

DVD-A has already been superseded ... by DualDisc and moved down-market. I don't see either of these new video/storage formats having any impact on SA-CD, more likely the players will just play them as is, same as DVD players do for CDs. It's hard to see what benefits the extra storage would have for music. Just because you can stick hours and hours worth of music on a disc doesn't mean the labels would want to do so ... and if they did, they'd want to charge you accordingly. These two new formats still have to do battle against each other in the market, and against DVD, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

DualDisc audio is lower res than DVD-A, right?

It's video and features that sell these discs. Since the DVD side can be single-layer only, something has to give. In theory, you could put high-resolution audio only (or mainly) on the DVD side, but why bother when readability has been compromised by reducing the thickness (of both sides). These aren't something you'd want to throw into your expensive hi-fi system. Technology-wise, these discs are a backward step ... but don't expect those promoting them to highlight this fact.

They are working on being able to use dual layers on the DVD side, but are single layer in the meantime. A good percentage of the DualDiscs out there are in fact DVD-A. I think that the main step backward for DualDisc is the specification which does not require hi-res audio.

It is interesting that you state A good percentage Dualdiscs are DVDA.....The information on the discs plus ,reports back state the opposite...Can you please confirm your informatiom as it totally contradicts what is being stated by users on the dvda forums.,...we havent seen any over in the UK...though reports that Germany would be pressing some but failed to say whether NTSC or PaL video....Dave http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7269012/

Do you have a source for information on this future dual layer capability?

I think that the next real advance in high resolution audio storage and playback will be in solid memory of some type. Why continue development of an electro-mechanical disc based playback system whith all its inherent problems? It's a kludge of a system at best having so many moving parts and weakness.

IMHO we will be in for a very big change in audio (and maybe even video) reproduction in the near future, a whole new "paradigm shift" so to speak.

Mass Solid Memory storage.....few if any mechanical moving parts to introduce anomalies....that's the way of the future. The only real question is how soon?

When DualDisc was first released, there were immediately a number of releases which were direct ports from the DVD-A versions of the same albums. For example, check out Silverline Records catalog, I believe just about everything there in DualDisc contains DVD-Audio.

Well, I read almost every article that I see on hi-resolution audio but I often don't remember where I read something. However, I just did a quick search and pulled up this one:
