I have the 90's Limited Edition MasterSound SBM 24K Gold RBCD mastered by Doug Sax (in the elongated packaging and pressed in Japan) from Columbia Records of Bridge Over Troubled Water. A disclaimer in the liner notes states "Due to the unprecedented popularity of this album the original master tapes were used a great many times and we are aware of certain artifacts resulting from oxide loss in the tapes. Rather than try to patch these things from safety copies, we preferred to keep these small blemishes in order to preserve the full sonic character of the original master." However, I must say It does sound great. Unfortunately the DR Database has no listing and consequently no scores for this album.

I'm listening to the 24/192 hi-res download of "Bridge" right now, and it has a somewhat veiled quality.

I wonder has anyone come across any information about how these latest remasterings were done, and what were their sources?

I was going to download, Bridge, tomorrow.

terence, what is your definition of "veiled", doesn't sound good.

My advice, Mark: avoid it. The BOTW masters have been severely compromised over the years and who knows what "sub" masters they are utilizing.

I recently purchased a Blu Spec version of Bookends from CDJapan and was pleasantly surprised at the quality.

You might be better off seeking an original RBCD (from the 80's) of BOTW before the severe oxide flaking, which has severely marred the original master tapes, occurred.

CDJapan does show a Blu Spec version of BOTW for about $15.......but NO info on what master was utilized.

I'll listen to my Tidal via Bluesound, cheap way of getting a temporary fix.

I find when I can listen to my Tidal subscription, it most often suppresses the urge to spend money on the most recent SACD disc. But I do love those packages and liner notes.

I just accrued a boatload of bonus reward points from my recent CDJapan purchase of 7 SHM~SACDs and applied those points toward the upcoming SHM SACD of Lennon's Plastic Ono Band, 1 SHM~CD and a RBCD (jazz title Pharoah Sanders Love Is In Us All) and the entire order w/s/h came to under $40 US.

Use those points, Mark and take a chance........S&G Blu Spec2 "Bookends" sounds fantasic!

Let's not give advice on avoiding things we have no clue about please.

I actually HAVE and have been LISTENING to 4 of the new S&G 24/192, they sound absolutely unbelievably good, particularly Bookends which has never sounded better.

This is really a model of how true hi-res transfers should be done. Sony have done a fabulous job here.

That 'problematic' Bridge Over Troubled Water? It sounds terrific for the mot part. Great depth and inner detail, and I cannot see how anyone could call it "veiled" whatever that audio buzz word means. It is hardly veiled, it has great clarity. There were a couple of tracks that revealed a slight bit of roughness around the edges that were an indication to me that a master tape might actually have been used here, but nothing to worry about. It is a very fine transfer.
