Never heard of this composer. What are we to expect from this music? Anything good? Influences?

Dunno his music, but he was a large influence on Grieg. And American fiddling too, apparently.

This wonderful painting, ‘Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer’, is by Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840), and it currently lives in the Kunsthalle Hamburg. It has also been rather cheekily adapted for the front cover of Jonas Kaufmann’s recent recital of German Opera Arias on Decca (RBCD). In this version, Kaufmann, doing his brooding, sultry thing, looks out at us against the painting as a backdrop. Despite this misfortune, Kaufmann’s recital is truly outstanding.

As for Ole Bornemann Bull (1810-1880), Wikipedia currently has much more to offer than my Oxford Companion to Music; this information is taken from the former source. Briefly, Bull was a much-travelled violin prodigy and virtuoso who became very famous and made a huge fortune. He was a Norwegian nationalist, helping to found a Norwegian-speaking theatre. In the summer of 1858, Bull met the 15-year-old Edvard Grieg. Bull was a friend of the Grieg family, as Bull's brother was married to the sister of Grieg's mother. Bull noticed Edvard's talent and persuaded his parents to send him to further develop his talents at the Leipzig Conservatory. Robert Schumann once wrote that Bull was among "the greatest of all," and that he was on a level with Niccolò Paganini for the speed and clarity of his playing. Bull was also a friend of Franz Liszt and played with him on several occasions. Bull was very successful in the United States and founded the colony of New Norway in Pennsylvania.

The Naxos disc of ‘Norwegian Violin Favourites’ features some charming pieces by Bull, and the slow movement from his E minor Violin Concerto sounds both lovely and characterful. US Amazon features a Bull SACD with Arve Tellefsen from Simax; oddly, Simax catalogues the disc under the artist and not the composer on its site, if you want to view the wide-ranging content. A further disc featuring Tellefsen of Bull’s ‘The Herd Girl’s Sunday’ and other works is available from Nkf. This new 2L release features both a Blu-ray and SACD disc, so expect fine sound; it is likely be of considerable interest to lovers of fine violin playing in general and the music of the Scandinavian Romantics in particular.

Is this a euphemistic way of saying it won't fit into a CD rack? i.e. store it where? Nah.

Unfortunately yes.

This is another SACD that is cheaper if I purchase from England, rather than a US vedor. Does anyone know if the Blu-Ray is region free? I would not want to purchase a copy from the UK and not be able to play it on my US BD player.

Given that this is not well known music, it's too bad I can't listen or preview it on either amazon or jpc.

The Bull Violin Concertos are breaths of fresh air and one should not hesitate to purchase this beautiful disc. The blu-ray audio disc is region~free and sounds wonderful in discrete multi~channel. And yes, I live in the US but purchased it from Crochet in England where the current US price is $21.89 + shipping. 2L Productions have several more SACD/blu~ray combos on tap. I own EVERY ONE and have been rewarded with new repertoire I never knew existed. (with the exception of the Grieg piano concertos)....all masterfully recorded in DXD discrete m/c. No Bull! Read the three 5~star reviews on Amazon US.

Flute Mystery is another enchanting sacd/blu~ray combo from 2L: Their packaging and printed inner booklets are first class all the way and should be a model of excellence to other companies releasing in this format.

For those who complain about the bulky blu~ray packaging, simply extract the SACD, place it in an sacd jewel box and invest in a Brother P-touch label maker (I paid $15 for mine at Amazon) which creates vertical labels......You can also create Property of labels for your boxer shorts when you go away to camp!

The BD in all of 2L's combo packs are region free.
