There are several SACDs (and DVDAs) that I have not seen much written about, but still are stunning performances, stunningly recorded. Two that come to mind are Mozart's String Quintets by the Fine Arts Trio (+Yuri Gandelsman), with a spaceous though detailed sound recorded at the Abbey of Fontevraud in France; the other is a recording by Andreas Staier performing on the pianoforte various Mozart works.

Might any of you name a few underrated SACDs you know of?

Hi Lawrence,

I am not sure how what would determine a production to be underrated, Both of the works you mention have good reviews associated with them, and one of them - the Andreas Staier pianoforte woek - is mentioned in one the recent threads (causing me to add it to my wish list - considerably large at this point):

However, there are a couple of works I would like to point out in this spirit, one is the Handle's La Maga Abandonata, which I find quite fulfilling to listen to, though it has received little mention on this site. Also, my recently acquired Fornaciari "Seasons" is very satisfying - it blows away all of my previous "Seasons", though it is the first I have listened to on SACD. However, I do have the Naxos DVD-Audio Seasons and it pales in comparison to this SACD version...

Another SACD title and artist who I feel deserves more recognition is David Elias with "The Window". This is one the few pop/folk albums on SACD that is not only 100% DSD but also independently produced and marketed.

Taken together with the fact that this is truly a great album, among my top 10 non-classical albums, I feel this artist should receive better recognition, especially among us SACD buffs.

and one also not reviewed on this site yet is Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's handel arias and cantata SACD, - the amazon review copied here though is spot on. Words fail to express just how wonderful this disc is.

You're so right! Wonderful SACD. Very nice recording without any overdubs, straight to DSD! As pure as can be. I heard there's coming another David Elias SACD!

Yes, he is coming out with a new SACD release sometime soon, though I don't know either the release date nor the title. I will be ordering it as soon as it is available !
