I just got the replacement. Same exact problem. Multichannel layer doesn't work but stereo layer does. At least it isn't any worse than the last one. Thanks for all the replies!

Looks like I spoke too soon. The stereo SACD layer works better but still skips a bit. Track 4 is totally unplayable. Ugh.

Well, I guess I'm in the same boat as the other Denon 2900 owners. I played this disc for the first time last night (multichannel track) and encountered the skipping, etc. about 9 minutes into track 3. I then tried track 4, and it wouldn't play any better. I have a few dozen other SACDs, and this is the first one I've had a problem with. I was going to try to exchange the disc, but now I'm not sure it's worth it. Really ashame, because the first two tracks (and what I heard of track 3) sounded really sweet.

Has anyone tried contacting Mercury Living Presence about this problem? Does anyone have the contact information for them?

Mike

I gave the disc to a friend with the Sony 777ES. No problems playing the stereo SACD layer for him.
We should contact MLP....

As I have mentioned before, I have never encountered a problem with either one of my Sony SACD players being able to read any SACD (I have over 150 now), including the MLP Rachmaninoff. Perhaps the problem lies with the Denon. My Cal Audio CL-20 had to go back to the factory twice before it worked correctly-I had some major reading issues and initially blamed the CD/s.

Perhaps, but that doesn't explain why this is the only disc in my (growing) collection of SACDs (~30 thus far) that I've experienced problems with. It also fails to explain why the other folks who had problems with the Rachmaninoff disc in this thread have not experienced problems with any of the other discs they own.

More likely, something is a little bit odd about this disc, and Sony players are more forgiving than Denon players in tolerating oddities. (A frequently heard complaint with Denon players is that they are very intolerant of disc imperfections like scratches and dust, so it wouldn't surprise me if the Denons are also extremely sensitive about data imperfections.)

I guess the good news for me is that the stereo SACD layer plays fine, so I'm not going to be giving my copy away.

In any case, to answer my own question of yesterday, I found the Decca Classics website (owner of the Mercury Living Presence label), where they have a form for user feedback: http://www.deccaclassics.com/dmg/contact.asp

I don't know if anyone will actually READ what is submitted, but I felt better for venting. :-)

The one player my disc would play on was a Sony, not sure the model number. The other player that partially played it was also Sony. I have over 200 sacd's and this is only one with any problems. When it's the player it happens with more frequency than just one disc. However, since the disc plays on some players, it's not necessarily the disc either. Some times I think it's just bad luck

I just played my new copy of MLP's Rachmaninoff (Janis) and found track 4 totally unplayable. Tracks 1-3 were fine. This was in stereo SACD mode. Concerned that my Sony XA9000ES was having a problem, I switched it to the CD layer. It played fine until about track 7 when it started stuttering.

This is the only SACD I have had any issue with. I have about 200 SACDs which have given me no problem. Similarly, I have had no issue with CD until now.

I take some comfort knowing it is not my player, but am disturbed that I (and others) are unable to enjoy the MLP release.

I will make an effort to learn how I might "calibrate" my player. I will report back if successful.

Does anyone know how to calibrate a Denon 2900 (short of sending it in for service)? I can't find anything about it in the manual, and my Internet searches have proved similarly unrewarding.

Thanks,
Mike
