If a review is unhelpful, then surely we can just read it and move on. What harm does it do anyone? Surely not enough to lead to put-downs? Can't we just relax, ignore it and move onto the next review. If the price of inclusivity and welcome is to put up with a few "wasted" milli-seconds, then surely its not too high? Eventually, new users will get the message about the standards their peers on the site seek, and will, in most cases, endeavour to meet them, - but give them a chance to do so.

Well put. That says it all. Thank you.

I will not stand by when someone calls me a racist and neither should you. Brenda's little tirade was uncalled for.

Read the comment on the previous page if you have a question. The person who should put a huge ? mark is me for having someone like you sit there and call me a racist.

dear flying, I have read the comment on the previous page and was glad to read your rebuttal. I believe that the phrase I used in my first post on this subject was "borders on racism in this case", and I subsequently used the phrase "suggests racism" again, due to the context which was that the reviewer you were scorning had CLEARLY indicated on this site his difficulty with english. I don't know about you but I couldn't construct a sentence half as long as catboy's review in Cantonese and if I did I'd regard it as an achievement.

Bullshit. You called me a racist. Don't sit there and try and sidestep. And the issue isn't whether you or I can write a review in Cantonese or Japanese or French. The issue was simply writing a little more about the performance and sound in any form of English he felt was necessary. Hell, it could have been in his own language for all I care. That could have been translated.

dear seth, I have enjoyed your pithy comments in the last week or so, but wonder, given your obvious tolerance, why you would want to stop people from posting reviews of any kind? I only started posting reviews because my responses to some discs were very different to those of their reviewers. Should I stop posting too? Can I gently remind you of what you said in an earlier post on this thread: "these are consumer reviews after all. It's not like any of what people write is printed in a newspaper or magazine".

You've missed my point, which is that reviews are for reviewing the content of a disc, not commenting on other people's reviews -- that's what the forum is for. Discussion between reviewers should happen in the forum, not in the review pages. This is one of the problems I have with Amazon. Half of the reviews are people just saying that they disagree with poster x.

More to the point, people can revise their reviews at any time which could make such references no longer relevant.

If you want to discuss somebody's review ... and all discussion is good ... simply click on "start discussion" or "join discussion" and the thread will appear here. It will also remain linked to the title in question so people coming six months later will find it.

dear zeus, good point, i hadn't thought of that (revision and relevance). I must admit, I hadn't really noticed the "start discussion" link, - thanks for bringing it to my attention (and providing it, too).
