SONY Japan has announced the release of sixty releases in the BLU-CD format which consists of pressing a disc utilizing a BLU rather than RED laser which supposedly reduces jitter. Among the usual suspect releases are Santana, Miles Davis (Kind of BLU) (again), Sly and the Family stone (There's a riot going on). Is this the way Sony is celebrating the upcoming 10th anniversary of SACD???? Let's face it, it's to combat Universal's SHM-CD and Capitol's HQcd but they're still 16/44.1 bit pressings. List prices are between $25 and $42. For my money (and counterproductive to this announcement) If you're going to go BLU grab "Live at Abbey Road" in Blu-ray. For roughly $19, you will be rewarded with 220 minutes in high quality Hi-Def and DTS Master Audio of the likes of John Mayer, Norah Jones, Branford Marsalis, etc. A steal, a deal but no closer to the SACD format that these "Captains" of Industry promulgated at the dawn of the 21st century.

I couldn't agree with you more! Sony really is blowing a golden opportunity in my opinion. It's just been in the last couple of years that people en masse have begun to truly discover the joys of MC audio, which is the format that SACD was made for. If Sony would concentrate their considerable marketing abilities on pushing the fact that the world has finally caught up with the SACD technology and the incredible improvements that the format has over all other CD formats instead of trying to jump on some other format bandwagon, SACD could finally become the predominant giant that it should be. Do I think that will happen? No, because giant corporations like Sony are idiots and only care about the bottom line. They don't give a damn about music. It's just a vehicle by which they can make more money. Such a sad world we live in.

Who cares? This is not a strategic format decision. Blu-Spec CDs are collector's items, a small niche product.

And SACD's are not?

Again, again, and again, this is a strategy that is aimed at the Japanese market (because it is Sony Japan and not Sony US or Sony Europe) and has nothing whatsoever to do with the US or Europe.

Both are niche formats. But releasing a couple of Blu-spec CD titles does not mean this is the format of the future for Sony.

What is Blu-spec? Can they be played on Blu-ray players?

What is it in the Japanese Consumer mentality that allows them to be peristently conned by companies such as Sony reinventing the wheel. As a tech aware race I would not have expected them fall for the marketing hype over and over again. I suppose that it is the love of new technology. Would love all the variations on a theme of RBCD to fail big time. It also angers me that they all claim to offer new and improved sound as though SACD's do not exist

Checked it up. Seems to me Sony's answer to SHM.
