Discussion: Mirror Canon - Tor Espen Aspaas

Post by Lindberg March 7, 2008 (1 of 7)
With MIRROR CANON I believe we have captured the most realistic image of a Steinway D-model ever conceived. I dare the competent users of SA-CD.net to challenge our view by offering 10 free promotional copies for evaluation :-)

Aspaas is a fine pianist.
How good? At least one of his Simax label recordings was copied and then passed off as being performed by Joyce Hatto :-) True.

Dear Lindberg

My copy arrived this morning. It is an extremely fine recording. Quite close in a neutral acoustic with a wide dynamic and frequency range. I think you should be justly proud of this recording. It will be interesting to see what those that listen in surround think. I put on Stephen Hough's new Mozart album on Hyperion (RBCD) as a comparison and it sounds boxy and restricted.

Tor Espen Aspaas's performances are rather fine too but perhaps red lettering on a black background for the composer's names wasn't such a good idea.

many thanks

Jonty

Thank you to Morten Lindberg and 2L for this disc. My copy just arrived. I've only listened to the first movement of the Beethoven and frankly, I'm stunned by the beauty of the piano recording!

I bought my speakers (Definitve Technology) specifically because of the way they reproduced piano sound, but I've never heard anything quite like this (well, actually I have--your Grieg choral disc)--so natural and coming from a silence that is at once total, and yet with "air".

I'll give a full review after I've had a chance to listen and digest the complete program.

Thanks again!
Bret

It's a really delightful recording (both musically and sonically). Thank you, Lindberg. ;-)

This is a fine (read stupendous) recording!

It is also a very compelling program and that statement comes from someone who is not 100% "sold" on the 2nd Vienna School. But every one of the works played held my undivided attention for its duration and gave me a great deal of enjoyment!

I am not so familiar with the Beethoven sonata to make critical comments or those of approbation other than to say I enjoyed it immensely.

Now I have to decide how many of my friends I want to purchase this disc as gifts for!

So yes, Thank you Lindberg and all the folks at 2L!

Yes, a fine SACD indeed - excellent recording as usual, slightly less bright then others from this label.

My only quibble might be that the Berg Sonata at 13'30 is a tad slow, 3 minutes slower than Perahia's recording. This leads to the work seeming slightly episodic, especially when Aspaas speeds up during the more vehement passages.
