Hello all

I don't think this release (1988) is multichannel but just stereo.

It's a part of the catalogue Astree recorded till 1990. Some 2008 releases should be very interesting : HAENDEL - Fireworks and Water music, MOZART - Requiem, BEETHOVEN - Symphonie N° 3 and others of viol (Couperin, Marais etc...) miam ;-)

Regards

Although marked as Stereo, the disc would appear have multichannel content. Probably similar to the first batch of Harmonia Mundi releases.

Yes, it does have a multi-channel mix even though on the cover there’s only the “Stereo” logo (and no, the rear channels are not silent).

Is it a digital or analog recording? JPC says DDD but may not be reliable.

I have always assumed that it was digital as the original and new booklets say it was recorded using only two microphones by Pierre Dechamps from Studio Pierre Verany Numerique. The Pierre Verany label produced some of the best early digital recordings. However, I cannot find a DDD nor ADD label anywhere on the original book or CDs. Astree the original label made a fuss about using Linn converters a few years later but not it seems on this recording.

Thanks.

So it looks like a digital recording.

Jordi Savall's 2007 liner notes also say the performance was "immortalized digitally".

"Cette conjonction humaine, artistique et spirituelle fut immortalisée « digitalement » grâce aux deux microphones (omnidirectionnels « Brüel et Kjaer, type 4009) et l'art de la prise de son de Maria et Michel Bernstein, assistés de Pedro Memelsdorff."

That page also states "SACD hybride stereo". It's odd that they would produce a (artificial) multichannel mix and not indicate this.

Am I to understand that the Savall "Eroica" is to be released on SACD. That would be great news!! It's a tremendous performance.
