Here is another dissenter, Jonathan Woolf:

Mr Woolf pretty much hates Fischer's Brahms recording as well. I've heard Ms Fischer live on two occasions and on all of her recordings except the 4 seasons dvd. I don't think we ought to beatify her quite yet, but if my reading is to be believed Mr Woolf is part of a tiny critical minority in these reviews. Personally I think the Brahms is excellent if not exactly earthshaking and the Tchaikovsky is the best recording of the piece that I've ever heard. Now I haven't heard even half of what's available, but for me that's the proverbial proof of the pudding: the reason I haven't heard more of what's available is that the piece has never spoken to me in any meaningful way until I heard Fischer's recording. For me it made a piece that previously seemed like a series of gestures into real music. That's about as high a compliment as I can pay a performer. I look forward to hearing her in the Brahms here in Philadelphia next spring.

Thanks for your response. I have the CD of Chung with Dutoit and the Montreal SO and have been wondering if it is worth getting the Fischer version.

at 3'29" into the finale, there's a 'blip' sound coming out of a woodwind instrument.

This recording has been around for some time. It is excellent in all respects and the definitive Tchaikovsky. Nothing to beat it.

Unashamedly a Julia Fischer groupie! And why not? She is a brilliant performer on stage and disc. Shame she's deserted the DSD/SACD sphere 'though...

What he said.... totally.

One thing: So many of the other recordings of this piece sound to me like someone is killing a cat.... Not so this one. This is the most lovely music-making. I thank all involved!

Woolf did not listen to it as an SACD yet look at what he says about the sound!

"I auditioned this SACD on an ordinary set-up but I wasn’t aware, as I sometimes am, of any considerable advance in perspective."

Talk about "piffle"!

And given my own experiences with the two concertos you mention, this is why I have such a jaundiced view of music criticism. Critic A loves what Critic B hates. And there is no consistency: I loved what Critic A loved but the next time Critic A will hate what I love and Critic B will love that one.

Negative music criticism must be taken with a healthy grain of salt. Who knows how bad Woolf's indigestion was the day he reviewed that disc?

This Tchaikovsky recording is the best I ever heard!
